Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series raring to go!

The popular and exciting Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series is preparing itself for the season opener at Zwartkops on 28 February 2015.

The Club has opened season entries for eligible drivers and cars via their website- www.bmwcarclub.co.za.

The series is made up of 8 rounds that are hosted at 4 of their own Bridgestone Track Challenge events at Kyalami, Zwartkops and Phakisa. The balance is hosted by the Extreme Festival and the Inland Championship.

Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series
The championship comprises 5 classes. 4 of these are based on lap time brackets meaning everyone has a fair race no matter what BMW they drive. The final class is the BMW Challenge; a class the series has introduced in 2015 that is loosely based on Group N rules from the heyday of South African Motorsport.
For those who want to push their cars and themselves to the limit on track, but are perhaps nervous of a full race environment, the successful BMW Track Days will continue in 2015 in the form of the Bridgestone BMW Track Challenge Championship. Cars are classed according to their technical specification and battle it out for the fastest lap time. The events are open to complete novices and professionals- the club even caters for two non-BMW classes. If you are completely new to a track environment, then the Bridgestone BMW Track School is worth checking out first to ‘earn your stripes’ before being let loose on your own. The Club even has a partner on board that offers track day insurance for road vehicles.
Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series Chairman Michael Broom says "2014 was a watershed year for the series and the club. We tried out some new ideas and in the process learnt what works well and what doesn’t. For 2015, we have chucked out what we don’t need and improved the good stuff. I am looking forward to a very good season".

Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series unveils its plans for 2015

In 2010, the BMW Car Club of Gauteng identified a need to provide their regular time trial drivers a more serious platform to use their purpose-built track cars, as well as provide an entry point into motorsport at an affordable rate in a very social atmosphere.

In 4 years the resultant series has grown phenomenally and attracted some big national names onto the grid.

The strategy for the series in 2015 is not to halt this growth but at the same time ensure the original spirit of the series is kept alive and well.

Bridgestone have confirmed their continued support of the club and the race series as a naming sponsor, as have club stalwarts MBS Carriers, G&H Transport, Top Watch, Speed and Sound, Tri-Cor Signs SA and Big Boss Auto.
The current class structures have been retained for the 2015 season, however a new exciting class in the form of the BMW Challenge has been added into the fray. This class can best be described as a revival of Group N in that the class runs according to a stringent technical specification. The class will form part of the same race and all drivers will be eligible for the overall championship crown.
Only a BMW E36 328i in mostly standard form is eligible for the BMW Challenge. All cars are built in one workshop using the same components homologated for the class. Every car will carry the same livery, run on Bridgestone High Performance tyres with a limited allocation for the season and carry small modifications to suspension, exhaust and brakes only.
Driver Training will be offered to novice drivers and technical support will be available at the track. Component sponsorships are on the table as well for drivers who enter the full season.
BMW Dealers, corporate partners and other interested parties will be encouraged to sponsor a car, a driver or enter a car of their own in a class where setup and driver skill will rule the day. A class full of equal cars that are affordable to build and maintain is just the thing this series needs, if not local motorsport in general. The class is strictly aimed at novice and ‘clubbies’ to improve the depth of talent at a grass roots level, rather than creating a means for experienced regional and national campaigners to dominate.
