BRIDGESTONE / BMW CCG Club Racing Series – Phakisa Track Challenge – 11 and 12 April 2014

The long awaited Bridgestone / BMW CCG track challenge at the Phakisa Freeway is only weeks away and regular club members and racing competitors within the series are raring to go. This will be the only visit to this popular race circuit during the 2014 season so it is sure to attract many entries. BMW Car Club Gauteng
After the first Time Trial event of the season at Kyalami an exciting battle for top honours looks set for the year ahead. If you are not ready to mix it up with the real racers then this is a great opportunity for you to get yourself accustomed to racing conditions in a more controlled environment. The 10 fastest cars – the top 5 from the Time Trials and the top 5 from the Race Series, will also be entered into a special one-lap shootout that will take place at the end of the day. To even things out a bit, the cars will be set off from a standing start as well. With trophies and bragging rights up for grabs there is plenty to fight for. Competitors from other race series are also welcome to use these events as practice in a mock race environment.
A number of BMW S1000RR and HP4 motorcycle riders will be joining us for this event in their own track session on Saturday as well. The sound of these impressive superbikes certainly added to the excitement and atmosphere of last year’s event and we are thrilled to have them back again this year!
The highlight of the day will be the second round of the MSA sanctioned BMW CCG Club Racing Series. The first event of the season held at Kyalami certainly created a few surprise results. A mere 8 points separate the top 10 drivers, with Bruce Turner and Carlo Garbini tied on points at the top of the log. With a number of entries expected to make their debut at Phakisa, as well as a few familiar faces making a welcome return to the series, the class battles should be closer than ever!
Entry fees start at R800 for Time Trial entrants. Full event details and entry fees can be found on the Club website www.BMWCarClub.co.za. The action kicks off at 08:00 AM and entrance to the circuit as a spectator is free. Food and beverages will be readily available for purchase in the pit complex area.
For just R100, spectators can also be taken around the track by a professional driver in one of the Bridgestone Hot Lap vehicles – provided that they have long pants, a long sleeved top and a helmet supplied by the organizers. The obligatory indemnity form will need to be completed and signed as well.

BMW CCG Club Racing Series

We have lift off! – BMW CCG Racing Series

The BMW CCG Club Racing Series will kick off its fourth season at Kyalami on 9 March 2014 at the Bridgestone BMW Track and Race Day. The series is one of the few remaining independently run championships with the majority of rounds taking place at the Club’s own track days- the Kyalami events have proven to be the most popular. BMW Car Club Gauteng
Citizen Motoring road test guru and scribe Mark Jones left the 2013 season the proud owner of the number 1 plate and bragging rights of being crowned champion even though he ran in the feeder class. His presence this year will unfortunately be missed but his victories have left an indelible legacy that many will try to emulate. The fact that he won this championship from the lower rung of the field speaks volumes about the Series’ ability to provide close, competitive and fun racing for any budget.
At the sharper end of the field though, the action is just as spectacular. Some of the quickest and most brutal machinery is being prepared for this club championship. The likes of Kris Budnik in his V8 powered M3 GT, Lee Thompson in the insane 335i known better as ‘Boris the Animal’ spring to mind. Soon enough though BMW tuning mastermind Sav Gualtieri will be back with a more modern version of ‘The Judge’ to reclaim his title of the Fastest BMW in South Africa, if not the world.
The new season sees many familiar faces doing battle, such as the duel of our two main sponsors Team G&H Transport and Team MBS Carriers. Both have some new weapons in the arsenal, including a highly tuned 135i and the only M3 CSL GTR we know of. New faces to the series include previous club chairman Troy Cochran, newbie Stefano Martinelli and Werner Koekemoer who has swapped the gravel of the regional rally championship for the tarmac of the BMW Club Series.
As always, this event promises close, exciting racing with unrivalled levels of camaraderie the drivers are attracted to year after year. The track day kicks off at 08:00 in the morning with the two races scheduled for 13:00 and 15:00 respectively. Entry to spectators is free, and anyone over the age of 12 can ride shotgun around Kyalami for just R100 in the Bridgestone Hot Lap Vehicles. Please note though that long pants and closed shoes are compulsory for this.
